A major artist of the 20th century, Ben, whose real name is Benjamin Vautier, is known for his actions and for his paintings. With his punchlines full of irony and impertinence, he integrates into our daily lives a permanent reflection on art and on the relationship to oneself.
Born in Naples in 1935, Ben left the city after the declaration of war in 1939. He therefore traveled through many countries with his mother until settling in Nice in 1949 where he studied at the École du Parc-Impérial and at Stanislas college boarding school.
At the end of the 1950s, he opened a small shop which very quickly became a place of meetings and exhibitions for all the artists of the École de Nice. In 1965 he created his gallery “Ben Doubt of Everything” where he exhibited artists such as Biga, Filliou, Venet and Maccaferri.
Strongly involved in contemporary art, he never ceases to support young artists. Today his works are present in the greatest private and public collections in the world, notably the MoMA in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna, the MUHKA of Antwerp, the Solotothurn Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art of Paris and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice.
